What Is a Project in Splync?
Splync is a shared budget tracker. Apps like Splitwise can divide expenses, but Splync goes one step further — it lets you set budgets for each category. This comes directly from Splync’s vision: to make life happier through a shared accounting solution. Splitting money is easy. Staying happy is not. It becomes difficult when your monthly shared expenses quietly exceed your shared income — or when you feel uncomfortable paying more than you expected, while your travel mates spend more freely in ways that don’t match your financial standards. Every shared activity has a purpose, and that purpose should lead to your happiness. That’s why Splync calls a shared group a project, not just a group. A project implies intention — a reason to spend money together.
Who Are Project Members?
Splync works a bit like a social network. You can add friends as project members, and those members become the people you share expenses with. But here is the important part: if you and your friends have completely different ideas of what a “good trip” is, you probably shouldn’t start a shared accounting project with them at all. Without a shared purpose, Splync becomes meaningless. We’re not here only to calculate numbers; we’re here to bring you closer to your own happiness. So before you create anything, think about this: Why do you want to share money with this person? What do you want to achieve together? How much are you willing to spend for that purpose? And how should the expenses be shared among the members? Your Splync journey begins not with an expense, but with a project — and with the members you choose for it.
Friend List and Project List
When you open Splync, the first thing you see is surprisingly simple: your profile at the top, a list of your friends on the left, and a list of your projects on the right. This layout isn’t accidental. It was designed around the two pillars of Splync’s philosophy — people and purpose. Your friends represent the people you share life with. Your projects represent the purposes you choose to pursue together. A shared accounting app is, in the end, about these two things. Who you spend with, and why you spend together. And if you have no friends in Splync yet, that is perfectly fine. You can add friends anytime through the “Add Friend” button. Or you don’t need friends at all — Splync works beautifully as a personal budget tracker, especially when you want to separate your solo life from your shared life. Whether you’re managing a household with a partner, planning a trip with friends, or simply keeping track of your own expenses, your journey always starts here — with people and projects, side by side.
How To Add Friends on Splync
Adding a friend in Splync is simple — and completely optional. Some people use Splync only for personal budgeting, while others connect with partners or travel mates. Either style works. When you tap the “Add Friend” button, you’ll see a few ways to connect. Every Splync account comes with a 12-digit auto-generated invite code. It’s based on a UUID, which means it’s random and impossible to guess — a small, invisible security measure built into the app. You can share your invite code however you like: physically show it, copy and paste it into a message, or let someone scan your QR code, which contains the same invite information. The opposite works just as well — if you already have your friend’s invite code, you can simply enter it and send a friend request. Your friend will receive a notification in the app. Once they accept, you’ll receive a notification too. And that’s it — you’re now Splync friends!
Let's Create a New Project
When you tap the “Add Project” button, Splync asks for a few simple pieces of information. Start with your project name. This isn’t just a label; it clarifies your shared purpose in a fun, memorable way. “Kyoto Trip with Funky Mates,” “Monthly Household Budget for October 2025,” “Wedding Plan for Leo and Aquarius,” or anything that captures what you want to achieve together. Next, choose your currency. Instead of locking you into a preset list, Splync lets you type it freely — whether it’s USD, EUR, JPY or something more unconventional. You can also pick how many decimal digits to use, depending on the level of precision you need.
Add Project Members and Assign Shares
Then, add project members by tapping names from your friend list. Everyone you include will appear in the project’s shared accounting space. Finally, set the shares. These define how expenses are divided by default. The total must be 100%, but if small rounding issues appear, the app automatically adjusts them. These shares apply to all categories unless you later create category-specific ratios. With just a few taps, your shared project is ready — shaped around your people, your purpose, and the way you want to manage money together. In the next article, we’ll continue with category creation and budget settings. Stay tuned!
